Leiknir Reykjavík football club is located in Breiðaholt, one of the biggest suburbs in Reykjavík, Austurbergi 1, 111 Reykjavík.
Leiknir Reykjavík was established in 1973 by parents living in Efra – Breiðholt suburb of Reykjavík. The parents wanted better services in the area for their children to be able to practice sports. So they held a meeting in a hut that workers used for coffee breaks while they were building new apartment buildings in the early days of the neighborhood. Back in the days Leiknir Reykjavík offered sports like football, gymnastics, and handball. From the year 1990 the club only offered football and basketball. From the year 1998 there was only football at the club until 2009 when the club offered karate for kids. Now Leiknir Reykjavík is mainly a football club but has basketball with no youth system and karate only for kids.
Leiknir Reykjavík offers football trainings for boys and girls at the age of 4 to 19 with highly educated coaches and top facilities to practice football. About three hundred people are involved with the club, the majority being children.
The main purpose of the club is to give young children in the neighbourhood the opportunity to practice the most popular sport in the world in a friendly environment without the need to drive there. Leiknir Reykjavík also offers karate lessons for children in primary school. Leiknir Reykjavík also has an affiliated club, Knattspyrnufélag Breiðholts (KB), which is like a reserve squad for Leiknir´s first team.
Leiknir Reykjavík has ambition to produce players who will play for the first team, also coaches for the club, referees and of course supporters for the club. Leiknir Reykjavík ambitions are beneficial for the club itself and for the community as a whole. Other purposes include trying to help raising up our children and teach them good values in life. Leiknir Reykjavík prides itself in being a club that helps foreigners to adjust to life in Iceland.
